It’s an all too common story: after participating in an HIV clinical trial, a woman in sub-Saharan Africa is left without the resources to buy a bus ticket to her health clinic, let alone to afford life-saving antiretrovirals. Boghuma Kabisen Titanji asks an important question: how can researchers looking for a cure make sure they’re not taking advantage of those most affected by the pandemic? i’m sorry but all i could think while watching this was “well duh! Big corporations looking to make big money on their pharma don’t care about those guinea pigs they use? they take advantage of poor uneducated villagers? go figure! (Hello, no one is surprised to hear this)”
No one in the TED room can help this, and no one and who can help will, and none of these corporations nor their government puppets give a shit. there’s always more fresh meat easily and cheaply accessible elsewhere.
Is HIV alone the cause of AIDS? If the answer is no, we should reset what we already know and start thinking about all possible solutions again.
OMG you don’t get the point these TED hipster talks are trying to make….why the hell are these negros not getting more free stuff they already get from the white devil.
If negros would get everything for free they would start building space ships and invent like crazy new devices to cure all forms of poverty
It is positive and hopeful to see TED talks providing a much needed voice to colored/minority women. Even in the year 2013, they remain the group which is being most heavily repressed by the religious right, and who remain the most underprivileged in terms of social mobility compared to Western women.
Rather than complying to the bare minimum of ethical standards, researchers should actually try and make their studies beneficient to the participants, make the whole process beneficient. Plus the bare minimum does require after care as well.
HIV sucks. We need something like the plague.
Well, to recap: I described the problem as being mainly caused by the sexual practices of third-world countries with large HIV and AIDS populations. She then replied by pointing out what she believes to be the sexual practices of poor white populations in the Appalachian region. I then pointed out to her that the evidence does not support her assertion. Behavior must change to fix this problem, and the first step to changing behavior is talking honestly about reality, without defensiveness
your life must be either quite intense or quite boring
You completely missed the point: its not unethical.
Read again.
500 characters is too little. Summing it up:
She complains about HIV research being unethical but provides
absolutely no example of anything unethical about the research.
She seems to have the idea that the researchers somehow have the
obligation to help the participants free of charge. Better some
research than no research, IMO. You are free to decline, you do
not have to participate. Instead of demanding more, try showing
some gratitude for all the free stuff you already get.
SO 29 YEARS AFTER ROBERT GALLO DECLARED “HIV=AIDS” USING UNETHICAL MEDICAL PRACTICES AND QUESTIONABLE, NON-PEER REVIEWED RESEARCH, WITH CONTAMINATED SAMPLES, YET STILL MADE THE STATEMENT EVERYONE WANTED TO HEAR WHILE ALREADY PATENTING ITS DETECTION METHOD DURING THE ANNOUNCEMENT WHICH WOULD MAKE HIM RICH, WE ARE NOW CONCERNED THAT THE WAY IN WHICH WE ENFORCE THIS LIE NEEDS TO BE ETHICAL? MALNUTRITION AND DRUG ABUSE CAUSE AIDS AND THEREFORE THE STATISTICS FOR AFRICA VS. THE US. HIV IS HARMLESS.
I’m sorry, what’s the point you are trying to make ?
why is aids in africa in the first place? this talk is a distraction: HIV antitode already exists, they launched it to test other newer substances on human subjects
So now they’re… man’s best friend? Good lord you fail at insults. Badday.
It’s that kind of denial that perpetuates the problem. AIDS and HIV are not rampant in Appalachia, when they are, we can look at their sexual practices, but until that time, let’s focus on educating third-world craphole that it’s not ok to mount everything that doesn’t run away.
I know it’s tasteles to say, but the lecturer is hot!
Truly the most usefull products and material in Africa is from the west. These couldnt be made affordable in Africa way back, but after a few years cheaper variants were
Made and sold there- cars for example. It will be the same with medecine too.
